HMD Global appears to have opened the floodgates insofar as the release of kernel source codes for Nokia phones is concerned.
The latest in the list is the Nokia 5.1 Plus that gets its code released today. Nokia 7.1 and Nokia 6.1 Plus source codes were released just a couple of days ago.
Several Nokia Models Have their Kernel Code Released in 2019
Nokia 7 Plus and Nokia 8.1 were among the first phones this year to get their kernel source code released. A few days later, Nokia 7.1 and Nokia 6.1 joined the list. Today, it’s the turn on Nokia 5.1 Plus.
Many Nokia phones already offer their kernel code available for download as can be seen on the official Nokia page. The list includes most of the models like Nokia 1, Nokia 2.1, 3, 3.1, 5.1, all three Nokia 6 phones, Nokia 6, 6.1 and 6.1 Plus, 7.1 and 7.1 Plus and the Nokia 8 and 8.1 as well. You can download the codes for each of these models from this link.
If you notice, the omissions in this list appear to be the Nokia 8 Sirocco, Nokia 2, Nokia 5 and the Nokia 3.1 Plus. These may join the list anytime soon, going by the speed at which HMD Global has been releasing the source codes.
HMD has Two Different Licenses
Nokia operates with the two open source code licenses namely GPL and LGPL. The release and sharing of the open kernel source code details for different models of phones in the Nokia brand are governed under these licenses. It is functioning within these licensing terms that the kernel source codes are now being released.
These codes are meant to add MODs and boost the storage of the phone in order to carry on development work on the smartphones. The downloading and using of the codes on your Nokia phones do not pose any difficulty. It is a simple one tap operation. Once you tap on the link, it takes you to the download dialogue and starts downloading automatically.
