The Sony Xperia XZ2 and Xperia XZ2 Compact models which were revealed during the Mobile World Congress 2018 are now spotted in the FCC certification listing.
In addition to these two smartphones, a rumored Xperia XZ2 Premium/Pro model is also heading towards official launch pretty soon. The official release date of XZ2 and XZ2 Compact is set to be March 22 in Malaysia. Release in other countries and pricing is expected to be confirmed soon.
FCC IDs of Sony’s Flagship Smartphones
The upcoming Sony smartphones have lots of interesting changes including a slim bezel-less display, an impressive camera and Sony has also removed the 3.5mm headphone jack. The FCC IDs PY7-24118Q, PY7-21831A and PY7-00718V are available in the FCC listing. The Xperia XZ2 model is identified with the FCC ID PY7-21831A while the XZ2 Compact goes by the FCC ID PY7-24118Q but the name of the third device with FCC ID PY7-00718 is still not pretty clear.
Comparing Dimensions to Confirm the Models
We confirmed the models listed in FCC to be Sony’s upcoming flagship launches by comparing the information available in FCC listing. The dimensions of both models matched with the specifications mentioned by Sony during MWC 2018.
Sony Xperia XZ2
Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact
Apart from the two confirmed models, Sony is possibly planning to launch a third flagship which was also found in the FCC Listing but further details about the smartphone remain sparse at the moment. The Sony Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact feature an impressive spec sheet making them the true flagship models that you could look forward to in 2018.
Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact – Hardware Specifications
The flagship phones will be powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor paired with Android 8.0 operating system out of the box. Sony is aiming to compete with Samsung and Apple by creating a bezel-less design. The XZ2 will reportedly feature a 3D glass display with 18:9 aspect ratio and is made using the aluminum frame for a premium feel. The LCD displays are made using Corning Gorilla Glass 5 but it’s a slight disappointment that they didn’t go for an OLED panel.
No Headphone Jack in the XZ2 and XZ2 Compact
Sony officially announced in a statement that they are going to get rid of the 3.5mm audio jack permanently. Following Apple’s footsteps, the company believes that it allows their designers to make stylish, slim phones. The upcoming flagship models will not have a headphone jack much to the disappointment of audiophiles. However, it’s worth mentioning here that Sony also announced their Bluetooth headphones named Xperia Ear Duo.
4K HDR and Super Slow-Mo Support in Camera
The Xperia XZ2 will feature the best-in-class camera. The 19-megapixel camera will have an f/1.8 aperture with the capability to record videos in 4K HDR. The rear camera will also be able to record super slow-mo videos in full HD 1080p resolution. While the camera quality is slightly lower in the XZ2 Compact, it should still be able to deliver great photographs and slow-mo videos. The phones will support wireless charging and use USB Type-C ports with fast charging capability.
Is the 3rd Model Xperia XZ2 Pro or XZ2 Premium?
We speculate the third model spotted in the FCC certification to Sony Xperia XZ2 Pro or XZ2 Premium edition. The rumored model was supposed to be announced at MWC 2018 but was postponed. With no announcements, it is difficult to find the specifications of the smartphone. Sony is yet to explain how the XZ2 Pro/ Premium edition is better than the XZ2 flagship model which we can confirm only when it’s officially announced.
With the FCC listing, it is evident that Sony will soon (likely in April) launch their latest flagships the Xperia XZ2 and Xperia XZ2 Compact. The pricing and availability of these smartphones are expected to be confirmed soon.
