The automobile brand has a long tradition of sticking to rear wheel drive systems but the 2017 BMW M5 is going to break the norms by adopting four-wheel drive for the first time.
The brand’s history that spans over decades only saw customers being bombarded with rear-wheel drive cars but the new M5 series will change history. The car is equipped with an improved version of the V8 petrol engine which is capable of producing about 592 horsepower and is mated to the conventional eight speed automatic gearbox. The top people in BMW opine that the new four-wheel drive is their most technically advanced car which is also dynamically capable and delivers the best acceleration capability.
Hildegard Wortmann, senior VP of BMW claimed that the 5 series will be on par with the brand’s 7 series models. It will be performance driven and futuristic with plans to implement autonomous driving technology in the future. The M-branded cars will undergo a major change from this year’s edition and will play a strong foundation for all future models. It is speculated that the new 2017 M5 edition will officially debut at the Frankfurt motor show with a price tag of £73,985.

A significant number of improvements are made to the new M5 which is mounted on a new, lightweight body that weighs at 1870 kg. The chassis has been tuned for best aerodynamics while exterior changes include wider sills, rear diffuser element, chromed tail pipes and a front fascia dominated by the tweaked version of the kidney grille design. Ever since its debut in 1981, the M5 series didn’t undergo any major exterior changes until now. The next generation model is significantly larger with 2975 mm length.
Spy photos of the car were already spotted and inside sources claim it runs on a 4.4-liter V8 petrol engine with twin scroll turbochargers and intercooler. Performance numbers are at 592 horsepower with 516 lb feet of torque which if confirmed will make the 2017 BMW M5 the fastest ever car in this series. The mode will compete with the Mercedes AMG E63 S 4Matic and the Audi RS6, both performance driven cars.
The car’s acceleration capability is expected to be at 3.5 seconds to reach 62 miles per hour so that it doesn’t lose to what the Mercedes model offers. Top speed if restricted to 155 mph to make it road friendly. Select top end models of the BMW M5 will be offered with more customization options when compared to the entry level variant.
